Can anyone confirm if the 4.2.7 CDMA release contains the Safari update from 4.3?

Why would it?? It's not a feature release.

#.#.X releases are bug fix releases.

I sent Apple a long description about how to build a GPS location service into .Mac, iPods, PowerMacs, and with a proximity sensor.

This was right after the kid in NY was killed for his iPod.

Remember SJ promised a fix for this.

I wonder if the proximity sensor will be wiresless disposable earphones

As for REMOTE TOUCH I still think all touch screen actions will work best with the fingers on the BACK of the device and with them graphically and transparently reflected over the interface.

And probably the ULTIMATE use of finger laser tracking would be a keyboard that has keys with multiple depths, dispose of those shift keys ! I also sent them a suggestion for a keyboard like this but that idea did not use laser tracking, it used a new type of button

If the touch area for the hands were just flat wings on the back the swung outwards, they could also act as a support for the screen EXACTLY LIKE the traditional book holder:eek:

OK, stop it already! Enough with the iPhone 5 / iPad 3 release date rumors, or put it on page 2.

Yet you take the time to read and comment on it? Interesting. I guess the notion that these rumors generate page views really is true!!

Nope. This was your first reply to me before I even mentioned "fact" :

Yes it was, as you were claiming to "know" that it was faked. Claiming that was offensive in the very least.

Yep, I truly hit a nerve. Your abrupt rant wasn't necessary, and why you only quoted me on it when others said the same thing is mystifying. Don't let your emotions get in the way of things.

    Hi kettle.

The 3G iPod did not have physical feedback, and they worked.

They most certainly did have physical feedback. You had to touch them to activate the buttons or drag your finger across the scroll wheel to use it. This would constitute a tactile feedback, even if there is no click. What people are questioning is the usability of an interface where you don't have any tactile feedback. I think that the answer is that there would have to be visual feedback to replace it, thus the further issue that you couldn't simply use this iPod in your pocket or use it very safely while driving. However, if we consider that this is meant to be the video / ebook iPod, where you'll be staring at the screen anyway, this is much less of an issue.

But the problem here is everyone is assuming that none-touch means you don't even touch the iPod. Did it occur to anyone that it means you don't have to touch the screen? This allows Apple to put a more durable transparent cover over the entire face of the iPod.

Think about it - a nice smooth seamless iPod face. When you put your finger over the display, the controls appear. Your finger touches the cover, but not the screen underneath. This allows for easy cleaning, and protection of the actual screen.

What you're describing is far less revolutionary, and wouldn't really constitute a none-touch interface. The current displays all have a durable, transparent cover over them, and they still get scratches and finger prints from handling. I think the reason that this interface idea is so exciting is that it offers the possibility of having a full screen for viewing without needing to worry about the act of touching the screen for controls making the screen dirty so you can't watch.

I guessing you been living under a rock.. Because my Truck CD Player plays AAC, PS3, Xbox360, PSP, DSi, 3DS, my wife and daughter's Android phone all play AAC.. The list can go on... Google is your friend....

So because YOUR head unit plays AAC so that means he's living under a rock and has no point?

I bought a JVC head unit about two years ago that had front-panel USB and iPod support and despite not being listed with WMA and MP3 on the faceplate it supported AAC. But even so, it did not support VBR AAC from USB thumb drives or CDs (iPod stuff was just passed through, so it didn't count). Thus, if I used my 256kbps AAC without VBR (my entire CD library was already converted to that), everything would be fine, but if I used a stock purchased AAC track from the iTunes store (which is 256 VBR), it would NOT play (MP3 VBR was supported, though). How many head units support Apple Lossless right now? How many advertise AAC support even when they have it (my new WRX plays AAC from the factory, but they don't exactly advertise it).

So while support has increased, especially since Apple finally ditched the DRM on music, there's no guarantee on every piece of equipment out there whereas MP3 is pretty much guaranteed to be everywhere and you can even buy used gear and it will still work.

About $50 US per Gig for additional RAM from Apple... Just a minor beating this time, instead of an all out rape like they usually do compared to third party.

Wish I had the money to get one right away.

The ways this has been described don't sound much like Apple. I guess they could build it into iTunes in some fairly fluid way, but still. There has to be more to the data center.

Nor do I see how the data center could allow people to upload non-purchased music. Too much required space, just look at your library size and do the math. iTunes has a massive user base.

To be fair, the brushed metal interface first debuted in 1999 with Quicktime 4.0. Compared to the horrendous user interfaces of the time period, that looks amazing. It is sad though that it took them until leopard to get rid of it...

It's not the brush metal that was bad. It was the Volume Dial on the left side to appear like a dial on a device. To change the volume was difficult.

If I own a PC and I want to run Vista, why would I want to also run Vista, on the same machine, in a virtual environment?

I do it all the time with XP. For one, it is a simple, clean environment that, if corrupted, can be restored with the copy of a single file. Whenever I do any "questionable" web surfing, not only do I use Firefox, I do it inside a virtual machine so that there is no chance in hell any of my real machine can be touched.

For Mac users, why would we want to install Vista-(via BootCamp) and then also use it under virtualization?

Again I'm doing the same exact thing with XP and my MacBook Pro. Parallels for most situations, BootCamp for when I need bare metal.

    cases?

    Cases?

    CASES?

WTF ... who uses cases? And who cares for cases?

If I look at people with their iphones, i see like less than 5% using anything on their phones. And all of them use the Apple bumper on some iphone 4. I've seen hundreds of iphones in the wild, but I still have to see one non-bumper case in the wild.

    Grow up guys ...

P.S.: WTF does one use a case for? To make the phone THICKER? UGLIER?
In Boston, mostly everyone I know with an iPhone, including myself, uses a case. It's more surprising when you see someone NOT using a case.

I use a case so it doesn't get as damaged in my pocket, and in the event you drop the device, there may be some saving grace that it doesn't shatter the glass.

just goes to show people still want to be able to see flash on their iphones reguardless of how bloated

Yeah, if people had an option to download a real Flash player for their iPhones, it would be one of the most highly downloaded apps in the App Store.

Disappointing, but expected. This actually brings up more questions than answers though:

    1) Is this a permanent move to a Fall Release of the iPhone?

I'm starting to think it will be. If you look at the "big picture" it makes sense. The iPod is in decline, so Apple's previous big Fall music event isn't really big anymore. The iPhone could shore that up and bring lots of sales to 4Q and maybe even, reinvigorate iPod sales.

Apple then uses early summer to push new Macs for back to school. Late winter/early Spring remains iPad.

Bolding mine... As a point of contention. Especially since iDevices don't even saturate the USB bus. I doubt Apple will spend more money to use faster Flash storage. Especially when (as of right now) Windows PCs don't have ThunderBolt.

Theoretically, but those of us that remember the iPod FW days know reality from benchmarks.

TB will only start to get popular when its released on Windows.

True, which is why Apple has a 1 year head start. Manufacturers will be jumping to get onto the Apple early adopter bandwagon b/c the profit margins will be fat. It will then spill over to the PC world.

When is that going to happen? I am not against Thunderbolt; not at all. I would love to have that kind of features in my iMac and a new Macbook Air if possible.

But when are we going to see those devices which take full advantage of Thunderbolt/LightPeak ports.
    For eg,

    - would it be possible to backup and sync full 64GB full iPad in 20s?
    At the moment, NO.
    - would it be possible to backup a whole TB of harddrive on an iMac in < 15 min?
    At the moment, NO.

    The question is:

For a consumer/pro-sumer, is Thunderbolt redundant for now? Will it take another generation of macbook pro's to generate pro-consumer Tunderbolt supported products?

    Thanks for answering.

TB isn't redundant right now, it's dormant. The TB port on the MBPs right now is effectively useless until there are peripherals to connect to it. But as this thread demonstrates they are coming. First to the pro market but it will drip down during the course of the year. I think Mac OS X 10.7 and iOS5 are going to provide more urgency for TB in consumer markets as well. WWDC will be the big kick off.

Another vote in the no column. It just doesn't fit with what Apple does, and where they are right now. As has been noted above, this would be a new market for Apple, and they don't jump into new markets without something that's going to overwhelm their competition and make them instant leaders. A TV set with a baked-in AppleTV isn't it.

I could see the AppleTV continue to evolve, perhaps adding apps or somesuch. But I think even that will wait. Put simply, the streaming video market is an unholy mess right now. Apple won't take a swing unless they feel they can put one over the fence.
