Also, why would I only want my music accessible when I have internet? Any road trips from where I live (Utah) generally put me in EDGE territory which won't be consistently fast enough to stream the audio at enough quality, let alone the fact that there are several dead spots along the way. I'll stick to having my music on my iPhone. No buffer, no stutter, no data usage. Oh, yeah. That. Data usage. With carriers bottlenecking you now, you think they'll favor Amazon cloud delivery for people who want to stream their music all day long? They (Amazon) will probably also do some more compression on the files so it'll sound like listening to your music in a tin can.

I have similar concerns. I'm betting (and I may not be saying anything new here) that Apple will roll out (1) free storage for all iTunes-purchased content, (2) an additional free 10 gigs, (3) tier pricing for additional storage as opposed to Amazon's dollar-per-gig, and (4) it only works - at least initially - when you are on wifi, similar to Facetime. I know that last part will be a deal breaker for a lot of people, but I believe they will be giving this storage/streaming away free for purchased items plus 10 gigs of other stuff at least and, therefore, it will have at least some value since it is free. And I do believe it will be a free method for wireless synching somehow.

    Anyway, jus' speculatin'.

This is the most ridiculous thing to appear on the MacRumors front page in quite some time.

Well, we thought the transition to Intel was pretty ridiculous five years ago. I bet the 680X0 to PowerPC RISC transition was feared as well.

I personally doubt that Intel on the Mac platform is going away any time soon, but I do anticipate perhaps a new line of devices in the iOS arena.

Remember what Steve Jobs said about moving onto the "next big thing".

The PC market is shrinking. It's not going to go away, but Apple has to have the "next thing" ready. Is that just another PC desktop or laptop? I don't think so.

Problem is, as I said before, Apple sells worldwide. And most of the world couldn't possibly care less if a product is made in the USA or in Japan. We want it to be as good as it is now, at the best price. America can't do that, can it? Prince increase = sales decrease.

    Yep.

I could care less if something is made in the good 'ole US of A, Japan, China, India, Belgium, Korea, Finland or Tibet.

    I don't live there.

What I care about is if it is good quality and is affordable.

What I've wondered since they killed the xServe is what they plan to fill their new data center with. Mac Pros on shelves? 1 billion minis? They aren't going to run it all on PCs. It would be a marketing disaster.

No. Processors Are Soldered In MacBooks and MacBook Pros So No Upgrades Are Possible.

The way you do the upgrade is by selling your current model and buying the next one. It's called rolling over your Mac for the next one. Some of us here have done it numerous times. It's not hard to get a good price for your used Mac. By doing this at the beginning of every update, it only cost you a few hundred dollars to move up each time.

Would it be worth it rolling over my 17 in macbook pro, w/ a 2.16 core duo to a macbook pro w/ merom chip and other new attributes. Would there be a significant difference in speed , ect. that would make it worth it. , and if so, what would i do about my registered applecare protection plan?

Rather than a traditional laptop/tablet idea, I'm envisioning a small device that truly combines
    1. music/vid player
    2. cell phone
    3. camera
    4. osx capable computer

Not sure there's a place for a cell phone, but I agree with the rest of your comments! This thing would be so sweet! I can't wait. Bet there'd be a $100 premium for a black version!

So what is a third of 13/16th of an inch? :)

    Easy. 13/48ths of an inch.;)

A child's mind is amazingly attuned to learning language. Given the fascinating cultural and linguistic diversity in the world, I am envious. I would love to have learnt more than one language as a kid. It's so much harder to learn as an adult.

But I am not at all envious of you having to learn two systems of measurement. That kind of cultural diversity I can do without! Sure, your kids will be able to handle it, but why should they have to? Because your generation was too stuck in its ways to embrace positive change?

I really don't see much functional difference between a language and a system of measures. Both express specificity using prearranged syntax and values.

The one point you may have is that most households don't teach both to their kids because most households only use one or the other.

Even beyond that, if we were to adopt the metric system 100% starting tomorrow, the transition would have to last for decades not only to encompass those who are too old to be educated, but also to deal with the infrastructure changes that would have to take place. At the very earliest it would be my grandchildren who would see a fully metricized US.

    The long-term advantages are:
    1) Less freaking-out of kids who are weak in math. "If you have a stick that is 3' 7 13/16" and need to divide it into 3 equal sections, what is the length of the each section to the nearest 1/64 inch?" as opposed to "If you have a stick that 1233 mm long....." - and no, I didn't check to see if they are the same -

    2) Same idea as above.... "If you have a tank filled with 450 cubic yards of water, and it is flowing out at a rate of 3 gallons a minute, how long does it take to empty?" as opposed to the metric system where 1000 litres of water is 1 cubic meter which is 1 tonne (approximately - since altitudes and temperatures affect the density of water).... but it's close enough for horseshoes....

This isn't an economic gain. It's a purely convenience gain for kids who probably should do some "difficult" math so they can get a strong grasp of the basics. They can use calculators and apps when they need to use their skills for larger applications.

    3) Manufacturing. As the last industrialized country in the world still non-metric, do people really believe that there isn't a cost when a US factory has to retool to provide a product for export? Or understand that the cost of goods being imported from off-shore includes the cost of retooling for an non-metric customer? Do people not think that some small factories in the US have lost contracts to off-shore customers because they couldn't afford to switch to a metric size? And that some US factories have probably been forced to retool anyway when the sole supplier of a component wouldn't make a special run of non-metric fasteners?

And I don't dispute this element of the argument. Many manufacturers have already done this (why just yesterday I purchased cereal and chips in metric quantities), and they should keep switching to improve their bottom line.

hmm, just checked the Apple Edu Store (UK) and i noticed the 20" iMac was a 5-7 day. Checked the standard Store, same thing. Wonder if that means they may put the Merom/Conroe in a 20" and keep the yonah in the 17?

Most likely not, but no harm in having a shot in the dark.

This would be great. I cancelled my home phone a couple years back and also cable TV. These cuts saved me close to $100 per month. To save an additonal $69 per year, the amount I paid last year on Amazon for MobileMe, would be another great savings.

A processor update only matters if software is written that requires it -- and no developer is going to risk cutting off access to a huge segment of the customer base by writting software that specifically requires the latest iPhone.

So, really, you're paying for power that you can't use 99% of the time.

This would be a huge mistake. I could almost see Apple getting cocky and trying to pull it off again, but with the 3D chip technology announced by Intel the other day and the rapid pace they are innovating and shrinking chips while lower voltage in their planned chips, I think that if anything it'd be the opposite and Intel would move into mobile devices. ARM won't have anything on Intel's PC chips 2 years down the road.

It's not like Intel is getting complacent. They are boosting performance and increasing efficiency at a very fast pace, and with the huge lead they already have over ARM in the PC environment, how is it possible that they would catch up?

This can be done quite cheaply, if Apple doesn't use off the shelf PC components - which is why current tablet PCs are so expensive. An Intel ULV processor is not cheap.

Shame that Apple moved away from the PowerPC really, when it comes to applications such as this. They could use a $20 PPC 750CL processor (16mm^2 die size, compare to the ~150mm^2 PC processors) at up to 1GHz (~2W power consumption at 700MHz), with a 30GB 1.8" hard drive (same as iPod), 512MB memory ... that'd be cheap (the display would probably be the most expensive part).

    Valuable post.

Nice...I'm glad to have a more rare piece of hardware. I love mine and have no issues, it'll only get better over time.Reminds me of the days of the RAZR, that's what the iPhone and iPad have become.

Honda sells a TON more cars than BMW by a huge factor...I'd rather drive a BMW, I guess you're all happy with the Hondas :)

that is a joke?? the xoom is a hugo. it's supposed better chipset can't muster anything need the actual speed of the ipad 2. framerate, better on ipad. polygon and pixel rendering faster on the ipad 2, apps better on the ipad 2. the xoom only wins on bugs, more on the xoom!! even the camera takes better pictures on the ipad 2!!!

umm what the hell are you talking bout. / means divide plan and simple. No assumption are being made.
In higher level class you go dot see that - with dots above and below it in anything more than maybe text books and even then it is not that common.

/ is not clear, how far does the division extend? Exactly as we see here. Using _ is much more clear. The best notation would be ( ... )^-1

People can talk about PEDMAS, order of operations etc but that is kiddies stuff really. Nobody ever used / during my chemistry degree, none of my tutors or lecturers spent time talking through PEDMAS and the like. Using _ or to the power of -1 is much clearer. It's even more confusing if you use / when there is another division in the denominator.

EDIT- I'm not talking about , I'm talking about using / or _

It is a new game after PPC->x86.
Apple is now competing directly with all other PC manufacturers. You can easily compare the hardware between different computers.
Hence, I am sure Apple will upgrade all MBs to Merom as soon as they have made sure they will get enough Meroms to satisfy the need of MBP.
Besides since both the iBook and 12'' PB seems to have merged into the 13'' MB, it is vital to keep this line updated for demanding users with a need for a smaller form factor.I think quick updates to the latest technology at a reasonable price is a good strategy for Apple right now. Many computer manufacturers have not switched over to even the Core Duo on their laptops yet, the ones that have charge a premium for them. The same is true for the Core 2 Duo desktops and Woodcrest. There is an 8 month lag in the main manufacturers (Dell, HP, Gateway etc) between the time that a new intel processor is available and they have cleared out their inventory and start offering the newer technology. HP is better then the others. Dell it is almost impossible to find a computer on their website with Core 2 Duo and the ones that are (XPS) can not be configured for anything less the $2500. They really charge a premium for the latest and greatest. Apple could go a long way by keeping their inventory short and getting customers the latest technology quickly.

As always, I'm quite conservative about any new releases.

I'm sure those that MUST buy a new computer this year will soon find themselves with empty pockets or maxed out limits on their credit cards.

I might consider a Merom based MacBook, but otherwise I'm waiting quite
a while for a new desktop.

Rev "B" quad core or octacore will be my next desktop upgrade.

Rev "A" of any release has consistantly proven to be an unwise purchase unless you can afford a new machine every 2 years.

Note that MS is dropping the standalone Zune hardware, and moving the Zune interface into Windows Phone 7.

If your phone can do it all, why make standalone music players?I am stuck in a limbo where I want the phone for everything that it does except the phone part...
