Why is no-one here talking about the WDC banner?
    http://img98.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wdcbannerff3.jpg

Let's hope that iMac with the '64bit' picture next to it means what I think it means for my iMac order ;)

Um, so this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=221399) big thread doesn't interest you then?

The logos are scattered all over the place, proximity means nothing.

I swear to God, I hope iDVD isn't gone completely but more integrated into iMovie or something along those lines. iDVD is one of my favorite applications in the iLife suite.

The 64-bit rewrite thing is pretty awesome though. Hopefully iTunes will be a part of that (doubt it though).

I really want iDVD to stick around (just like I'd like DVD studio Pro to get some more lovin') but I wonder if Apple may be making a general interactive export app.

Basically, an application that can not only export to DVD, but also an intractive Quicktime file, or a small self contained mac/iOS app, or (to iWeb (HTML5/CSS3/Javascript)
I don't know, I doubt that would happen but it would still be pretty awesome.

I'll stick with my iLife '08+iMovie HD solution instead. Apple's gotten many things right with looking forward (early adoption/centering around USB vs legacy ports etc.), but this time I'm not seeing the draw. Oh well. Then again, I'm still a fan of Quicktime 7 Pro, so go figure ;)

+1 QT 7 Pro (hopefully Quicktime X will get there someday)

I work for UCSD's Resnet department and I have also noticed a sharp incline of mac users this year. A little under half the support calls/appointments I get now are for macs (which says something about their ability to "just work").

Personally, if I were to buy another computer atm, it would also probably be a mac. The decision is quite simple now that mac's are reasonably priced and can run windows just the same.

An application from iLife '11 has already been released. It's called iTunes 10. It's not 64-bit.

    What?

iTunes have never been a part of the iLife suite and it have absolutely nothing to do with iLife except for media browser type of deals.

Put me down in the, "I'll believe it when I see it" crowd. Getting decent battery life out of anything with a 0.3W radio transmitter in it is difficult -- unless you don't use it to actually talk to anyone, or put in a large battery. "Ye cannae change the laws o' physics!" :D

Then there's the whole broadcast standards issue:

Just weight an MBA 13, and figure out why it weighs more and costs more.

And if you shrunk the bezel while still using a standard sized display (same cost), the keyboard would stick out the sides, which would look pretty whacky.

I was pretty clear that I wanted a bezel shrink to accommodate a larger screen not to have a smaller laptop.

The only downside would be that an offline navigation system requiring only a GPS signal would require GB's of maps data to be stored on the phone. A sacrifice that a lot of people aren't willing to make. Especially people with the 16GB models. Otherwise, without an internet connection, you will just appear as a dot on a map full of gray squares. That's the reason Apple chose google maps in the first place. When they first introduced the iPhone, there would be no plausible way to store maps on a phone with only 4/8GB of storage.

Yes but if you enter an appointment in iCal then the system could cache the required data before you leave wifi range. Most your adhoc travel is going to be your home city right. So it could have a cache of your home city in high detail in a couple of hundred Meg right?

Sure if you where doing a couple months of travel it might need lots of space but day to day it shouldn't need much.

Increased marketshare is good, up to a point. Also, if world marketshare is staying the same, but the US is increasing, somewhere in the world apple is becoming less popular.
Yup I agree, I think more Windows users are actually switching to Linux now and some Apple users too, but I don't know for sure maybe someone canfind a recent survey taken with that.

In OSX, there's no way to disable the paging file (virtual memory). This is a real problem is if you have an SSD, because half the memory is allocated on the hard drive. That means your SSD will be toast in a few years. It doesn't matter how much stuff you have open (how much memory is allocated). The operating system is always writing memory to the hard drive. Does that seem counter-productive? When you open an app, the whole point is for it to be accessible in real time, right? And you don't want it destroying your SSD slowly over time!?

ANY reading, writing or even running a conventional spindle based HD will slowly destroy it over time.

I have long runtimes on most of my systems and I average very few pageins/outs however it is very nice to have when the systems needs it.

Running a unix system out of memory will cause bad things to happen. I think most people would much rather take a small performance hit and have the system write out to swap rather then just fall over.

With things like hardware based wear leveling and TRIM this problem is greatly reduced. Also, in this day and age most people replace hard drives every few years anyways because of space needs alone.

sorry for late reply.. but it worked.. ordered the below from crucial:

    CT1226751 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM Upgrade for a Apple MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 (15-inch DDR3) MC371LL/A System

What's the difference between that memory and this one? http://www.jr.com/crucial/pe/CRT_8G51264BCK/#productTabDetails Different model numbers, but I can't seem to find a difference.
