better display than the OEMs. That counts.

Last time I checked, the display is not included in the Mac Pro. I would also claim that the ACD isn't that great and Apple only offers one option. For example Dell offers various displays of many sizes, including U2711 which uses the exactly same panel as the 27" ACD.

Let's see: Safari, Mail, Bento, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iTunes, iLife and many more. You might as well claim that Microsoft doesn't make much in the way of software.

Internet Explorer, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Windows Media Center/Player...

Pulling up the software card is always moot. If you need a software that is Mac only, then Mac is your only option but that is only you, so claiming that a Mac is better in general isn't fair.

If we get back to the original point, yes, the SP Mac Pro is still overpriced compared to its competitors. However, the extra price can be justified if your needs are driven by OS X. On the other hand, if one uses no OS X only software, then it can be hard to justify the big premium.

    !!!!!!

It's minor news, I guess, but I'm SOOOOOO glad to hear it. Now I can listen to "Before These Crowded Streets" and "OK Computer" without the annoying gaps!

Just so people are clear about what's going on here, there is only a single on-screen image at all times, and both of your eyes are seeing the exact same image at once.

This illusion will NOT appear to be 3 dimensional if your head isn't moving and the screen isn't moving. Either your head or the screen must be moving around for you to sense a partial illusion of 3 dimensional space.

Your brain uses several different cues to build its mental representation of where things are in 3 dimensional space. Each of these different types of spatial cues contribute a different amount of information that you build your mental space representation on. The type of dimensional information that this illusion delivers is the least effective 3 dimensional cue that your brain uses, meaning this will be a relatively weak type of 3D illusion.

Don't get me wrong, it's still cool and will still be fun to play with and may wind up being useful, but don't get your hopes up that this will be a very convincing type of 3D illusion - because it won't be.

Combine this with 3D glasses technology, and you will have everything to simulate real life 3D: seeing an object from two different angles at once + being able to change your viewing angle by just moving your head!

Nope, there would still be some missing 3D cues that your brain uses to form its full 3 dimensional image.

As you focus your eyes on an object that is nearer to your face, your eyes start moving into a more "cross eyed" position, and when you focus on an object that is further away then your eyes's gaze moves further apart into a more straight-forward view. The brain uses your eye gaze separation amount as part of its 3 dimensional input information.

Also, when you look at an object that is nearer and further to your face then your eye lenses change shape to keep the object in focus. The brain uses your eye lens focus-shape amount as part of its 3 dimensional input information.

Both of these 3 dimensional information inputs would still be absent in a head tracking + stereoscopic (glasses) setup that would still be absent.

And there's also a whole bunch more depth perception cues that your brain uses to build its full sense of 3 dimensional space.

I think it's brilliant. I am off Apple in a big way at the moment.

+1. I still love my Macs and iPod, but Apple has been a huge letdown in the last year. It's just another gigantic corporation.

They should allow the public to view a history of other reported problems within that area. If not, then someone else should create an app that does that and then forward the trouble tickets to at&t. Then at least we'll all know how many people are experiencing the same issues.

Still a few differences. Have to factor in more things.

    Mac Pro two network cards.

No bluetooth on Dell Precision T3500?

You can add these and still save over 1000$ over a Mac Pro.

Seems the Dell Precision T3500 power supply is 525 watts where the Mac Pro
is 980Watts. As far as I could find.

But you can't even run two higher-end GPUs in the Mac Pro  It doesn't really matter how big the PSU is when you can't use its power. It's not like the 525W isn't capable of running the Dell T3500.

Have to factor in Heavy duty aluminum case vs thin sheet metal & plastic. Mac Pro cases are not cheap.

And the Dell would still end up being around 1000$ cheaper.

There are already some apps that do this subtly using other techniques.

'Labyrinth LE' is one that I know of right now, but it's just a way to make it look cooler. The gameplay doesn't depend on it. I look forward to seeing others push the limits like this. That one works when you move the iPad...this head-tracking one has the advantage of being able to leave the iPad on a table while you only move your head.

This could lead to some amazing games, like maybe one where you control something on the iPad with your iPhone as the controller and the screen on the iPad 'moves' based on how you move your head. You could literally look 'around' objects in the game while it sits propped up on a table in front of you.

    Looks awesome!

I'm blind in my right eye, and this will allow for me to experience 3D for the first time. Existing methods require binocular vision but this works for me, and I was pretty darned convinced. I don't see how you guys can expect better than this, seriously!

Love my Android... Sorry Apple, but I can't afford the iPhone.

Don't know why not; you can go down to Walmart* and get one for as little as $49.99. Probably still be better than your current Android phone--unless you paid more than $200 for your Android.

The product is undoubtedly real, but announcing it in December, or even at MWSF in January, would be the height of stupidity. They'd miss the Christmas buying season and piss off both the buyers and recipients of new iPods. That's probably 20 million people in the US alone who would be angry with Apple.I think most people buying ipods would be those GIVING gifts. At that point, the person getting the gift is happy and the one giving is likely a grandma or parent who's not going to be really following when the next generation of ipod is coming out.

We few, we band of brother macrumor types, would be pissed, but I don't think the average person.

Exactly. It's really funny to me when self-professed Greenies buy these electric cars in the name of saving the earth. Where do you think that electricity to charge up your car comes from? Well, if you live in the US, it's most likely coal. So your electric car is actually a coal powered car. lol.

That is true. However, the potential efficiency is higher with electrics or plug-in hybrids. Thus, they have the potential to pollute less even when the electricity comes from a coal-fired power station.

There's no carbon-neutral solution out there, unless Toyota starts planting a million trees for every Prius they sell. But electrics and hybrids are generally cleaner.

No, you don't. Renewable bio-fuels like biodiesel are the way forward. Not clumsy inefficient electric cars that only go 80 miles at a time.

Increased biofuel production causes food prices to skyrocket. That pretty much guarantees that biofuels will be a niche market for the forseeable future. They are great if you are the only person in town filling up his or her Merc diesel from restaurant oil - but when everyone wants to do it there just isn't anywhere near enough fuel.

Do you want to know what the "way forward" really is? Drive less. There isn't enough energy in the world for everyone to tool around in their cars as much as they do now. But nobody wants to believe it.

i have no idea though ... it is even more funny because i actually know the person who registered that new Chrysler Voyager (he is using for his business).
if you are interested i can easily post the rest of the numbers

Now I'm curious; what's the best selling brand? Funnily enough, my family used to have a Voyager years ago. It was actually a very solid van, if a bit crude. We don't get the diesel option in the US though, so we had to make do with a gasoline 2.4L with 20mpg. :(

The chip alone doesn't really distinguish the macbook from the macbook pro. In the wake of the first wave, the pro was upped in GHz just a bit so that no model was slower than a macbook, but for that period of time they use the same exact chip but were obviously not the same computer. The fact that the pro has better display real estate, a dedicated graphics card, the aluminum shell, 2 firewire ports, a slot for an express card, a double layer superdrive and now support for 3GB of RAM make a seriously big difference when compared to the macbook's hardware. simply adding C2D wont make it equal to the pro at all. also, how much more overhead does apple actually see compared to what they'd make if macbooks had core 2 duos in them?

I have to agree with the overhead argument. There is still plenty to distinguish between the two, even if they both have c2d. And more important than the differentiation in componentry of the two notebooks is the difference in price. Apple cannot maintain the current macbook price, given that (with similar components) the macbook can be more expensive than the new macbook pros. Without either a drop in price (which is not likely at this point) or an update, macbook sales will drop. In other words, something has to change relatively soon...

If they don't want you on their network, they should keep it secure. If I don't want burglars, I should lock my house. If I don't lock my house, I only get intruders, but no burglars.
And confiscating stuff is tricky to do here, I know parents have sued schools and teachers for damaging confiscated goods, but also for confiscating them. In multiple cases the school was given a small fine but with that fine also a reprimand.
And I wouldn't give my air away. Or I would ask him for a receipt on which he declared an undamaged laptop with serial number and the value of at least 150k. All the data of my home business is on that thing and if it gets damaged or lost it would really hurt me. Let's then see if he still wants the responsibility.
And it is odd, in afrika and India kids get laptops to get a chance to learn and at your school the confiscate then while you're working in them?! Odd, to say the least.

80GB External drives are being sold for 30-40$ at most. Im sure they can offer it next to the 10 DVDs package or something thats offered for Final Cut for 40$ more. Far easier and faster to install from an external drive than 10 DVDs. A lot of huge packages are starting to come in the external drives instead of 10 DVDs.

Yeah, but those DVDs will be around fifteen years from now when, presumably, you still want to use the software you dropped $1200 on. Show me a hard drive that will do such a thing, and you've got me sold. Until then, especially for professional apps costing significant sums, DVDs are going to be the standard.
